Medieval Art
In all likelihood the church had several small altars that were dedicated to various saints. On the main altar a winged altarpiece containing wooden sculptures captured the attention of the worshippers. Out of these sculptures, the figures representing Mary and the Child, a female saint, and St. Dominic remain in the church to this day.
In the Middle Ages simple paintings depicting animals and humans decorated
the vaults and walls of the church. After the Reformation the paintings were
covered with whitewash. The fire of 1893 burned away the more recent coats of
paint, and it proved possible to make copies of some of the old paintings.
Nowadays, these copies are among the holdings of the National Board of
Antiquities Finland.
