Fire! Fire!

One Sunday morning in May, 1893, disaster struck the Church of St. Lawrence. As far as is known, the fire started from the heating system, and it destroyed everything wooden in the church and damaged part of the stone structures as well. The altarpiece, the chandeliers, the brass sconces, and the liturgical vestments were saved from the fire.

The church was repaired by the following spring in accordance with a plan prepared by the architect Theodor Höijer. The result, a mixture of medieval and Höijerian styles, is unique in the history of Finnish architecture.

The church’s equilateral, neo-Gothic windows, pulpit, pews, and galleries date from this time. The vault paintings were patterned after the decorative friezes of Notre-Dame Cathedral of Paris. The bell tower was also rebuilt.
